Prostitution policy

Prostitution has long been tolerated in The Netherlands with the reasoning that the world's 'oldest profession' has proven impossible to ban by the government. Prostitution has been made legal in the Netherlands since January 1988, when it was defined as a legal profession.

The Red Light District in the oldest part of town has existed since the 14th century and is a phenomenon around the world. It is a network of alleys containing several hundred tiny one-room apartments rented by female prostitutes (and some ladyboys...) who offer their services from behind a window. When it comes to window-sex don't think about something romantic. The most consumed product in The Red Light District is the famous 'A Suck and a Fuck in 15 minutes and get out of there!'. In average this will cost you about 50 euro, depending on the taste you've got.

Besides all the 'red' windows there's a wide variety of other entertainment in this area. Peep shows, sex shops, sex theatres, a sex museum and lots of coffeeshops make this part of town the place to be for the tourist who wants some entertainment extravaganza...

When it comes to sex theatre, the most famous is the Casa Rosso. Here you get a kind of sexy and stylish show with (mostly) beautiful people in a normal and clean theatre. Another famous place in the Red Light District is the Banana Bar, where the girls all have their own routine game with one or more bananas.

Prostitutes are united in the Rode Draad (Red Thread), with the aim to fight the rights of all sexworkers, who work in the Netherlands, whether male, female, Dutch or foreign.

When it comes to sex almost everything is possible in the Red Light District. Just keep your respect for the ladies and don't do things you will regret at a later moment...
