Mayor wants three-day waiting period to buy magic mushrooms
September 12, 2007 - AmsterdamToday the mayor of
In his letter he proposes a three-day waiting period to buy hallucinogenic mushrooms. With this 3 day wait he wants that mushroom buyers fully understand what they’re purchasing. Under the proposal, potential mushroom buyers would have to show their ID when visiting one of the smartshops. They would then be given a card with the date listed on it, as well as flyers with information about the effects of magic mushrooms. Three days later, the mushrooms could be picked up.
The so-called problems with magic mushrooms are almost always caused by young tourists who take it impulsively and not knowing exactly what kind of effects the mushrooms will or can cause. The mayor describes in his letter that this problem is an Amsterdam problem, not a problem of the whole Netherlands . He asks the minister to let him deal with it ‘the Amsterdam way’, in stead of just making it completely illegal.
The last few months there were some accidents with people who consumed magic mushrooms and tripped out causing much trouble, in one case even a tragic death. The Dutch parliament immediately reacted with a proposal for a ban on magic mushrooms.
The Dutch minister of Health didn’t want to go immediately that far. He wanted to do research first and make a decision later. That moment is about to come somewhere in the upcoming weeks, maybe days.
