Day 1 of Banning Tourists from Dutch Coffeeshops
So it has finally happened; the first day of banning tourists from buying their beloved herb in the Southern cities of the Netherlands has come. From now on visitors need to have a ' wietpas' to be able to enter a coffeeshop. And this new rule states that only residents of the Netherlands can register for this so called “weedpass”. Today has been a very hectic day in coffeeshop-land as in many cities the new rule created confusion and chaos. In Maastricht, a city close to the border of Belgium only one shop opened its doors in the morning just to refuse the first tourist their entrance to the facility. This of course resulted in angry foreigners who then went in a big march to the local police station to report a case of discrimination. All other coffeeshops in Maastricht didn't open their doors at all out of protest.
Maastricht was not the only city where the new law caused some disturbance. One shop in the city of Tilburg has been selling to foreign customers just to show the government that they do not at all agree with the new rule. There have already been reports of street dealers driving over from other cities to sell cannabis on street corners to customers that have been refused by the local shops and at the moment there are not much Dutch citizens that have registered for the pass because seriously, who wants to be registered in any system as a frequent cannabis smoker? And how long does the government think they can manage to uphold this dumb law without the smokers society being smart enough to come up with new ways to obtain their favorite smoke?
P.S. Amsterdam is still no problem though. The ban will probably go into effect for Amsterdam at January 1, 2013, but it's still not 100% certain it will go through at all.

Quote of the Day
"I don't want to fucking give the United States government one fucking dollar of taxes. I think that they should go to fucking jail for getting you and me and 20 million people getting arrested for pot. It is the safest thing you can do in the universe."

Was just in Maastrict today, all the shops are still closed in protest of this law. The shop owners aren't happy with this weitpas, as they lose big business...forget about the MILLIONS they earn from tourists, on top of that, they can only have 2,000 customers per shop. The Dutch gov't are idiots if they think "drug tourists" were a problem...those tourists were bringing in Billions annually to their economy...and let's face it, who wants to go to the Netherlands for a vacation if you can't buy weed there? Why would you not go to France or Italy instead? People went to the Netherlands (Amsterdam specifically) for 4 Reasons: #1-go to the coffeeshops! #2-Visit the Anne Frank House #3-Visit the Van Gough Museum #4-see the red light district. If pot is off the table, I'll spend my thousands on going to Italy to see the Vatican city, the Leaning tower in Pisa, or go to France and see the Eiffel tower. The red light district in Amsterdam isn't all that much different from many European cities where brothels are legal, and the girls stand in lit up windows....Basically, the Dutch Gov't have just screwed their Country with this law...they will lose Billions in revenue of the legal sale of pot, as well as all the tourism, shop owners will have to close, people will lose jobs, and street drug dealers are already on the streets right now selling it illegally.

rabidracoon wrote 1 year 1 week agoI live in Belgium (Liège) and I used to go to Maastricht coffee shops to get my weed. Now I have no choice but buy crappy weed from an illegal street dealer who is hard to trust. Good job in reducing criminality !
visitor wrote 1 year 1 week agoSad day really that Amsterdam won't be Amstersdam anymore. Glad i live in California. But that really does suck. When I hear some crappy story like that I just go and break into my secret stash of Splitarillos and hoodWraps. Cigars and blunts all u need!
