France Not Legalizing Cannabis

It might not really come as a surprise to most, but France is not planning to legalize cannabis any time soon. This was officially announced by the French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault. For some time there was some confusion about it because Vincent Peillon, Minister of Education had mentioned to favor a new debate about the legalization of cannabis during a radio interview. "This question is worth asking, and I am amazed sometimes by how France is a bit behind on this subject, which for me is important."

Said Paillon during abroadcast organized by AFP, France Inter radio and Le Monde. Of course this immediately caused anger amongst right-wing law makers and Jean-Francois Cope, leader of the UMP party, demanded a clarification from President Hollande. Unfortunately, Peillon later claimed that his statement was purely a personal one and that it does not mean that the laws in France will be changed any time soon. Bummer!
